An Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic health care settings.
The Athletic Training Staff at The University of Texas-Pan American works with all 14 NCAA Division I teams to provide health care and medical support to all UTPA student-athletes. This includes the supervision of team practices, the prevention, care, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, game coverage, daily maintenance of the Athletic Training Room, and the coordination of the referral of student-athletes to local medical professionals as needed.
The mission of The University of Texas-Pan American Athletic Training Staff is twofold. First, the sports medicine personnel is dedicated to provide the highest level of medical care possible to all UTPA student-athletes regardless of sport, gender, or ability level. This includes the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and care of athletic injuries, as well as the education and counseling of the student-athlete regarding health issues.
In addition, the sports medicine personnel is dedicated to the development of the undergraduate student into an educated and experienced athletic trainer with a professional attitude who is eligible to earn a bachelor's degree in a health or education related field and take the Texas State Licensure Examination.
