March 29, 2007 It was five years in the making, but University of Texas-Pan American Director of Athletics Scott Street feels it was something that needed to be done. Published by McGraw-Hill and written by Street, Life Skills for the Student-Athlete is designed to support the development of a student-athlete in all aspects of life, from academic and athletic achievements to personal development, career development and community involvement. "There are other books out there on life skills, but the other ones are strictly academic with a little life skills in them. This is the first one to my knowledge that really has all the essence of a student-athlete in it with academics, athletics and personal growth," said Street. Organized in an accessible style, the textbook gives the student-athlete the essential knowledge to make the right decisions in life through a variety of ways, including journal entries, student-athlete spotlights, chapter summaries, tips and keywords. The textbook is filled with a variety of stories, anecdotes and scenarios that will help guide the reader through the text and through life. "I'm excited that it's finally out, and I'm pleased it has received good reviews from my peers," added Street. While five years is longer than the average student-athlete's stint in college, Street's Life Skills for the Student-Athlete will find its way into the hands of the next generation of students, and will hopefully make the transition into adulthood for many young adults easier. "Student-athletes are put in a variety of situations and they should be able to have the knowledge and the forethought to make the right decision. The biggest thing for me about the whole book is for the student-athlete to have the ability to make the right decisions," said Street. The book is Street's second textbook published. In 1999, the UTPA Director of Athletics wrote Athletic Protective Equipment also published by McGraw-Hill which was a compilation of various experts' knowledge in their particular field of athletic protective wear.
