April 7, 2006 The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that Marcelo Schmidt has been named its Faculty Athletic Representative. Originally from Argentina, Schmidt has been a native of the Rio Grande Valley for the past 17 years and received his bachelor's degree from UTPA in 1996 in kinesiology. He followed up his graduation with a two-year stint as a teacher's assistant before receiving his master's degree in education in 1998. Schmidt has been a full-time instructor in the kinesiology department for the past seven years. "I'm very excited to begin my duties as UTPA's Faculty Athletic Representative," said Schmidt. "I have a love for UTPA and UTPA Athletics, and I'm looking forward to working with our student-athletes and athletic administrators. This is an exciting time for UTPA Athletics, and I'm happy to be a part of it." Schmidt replaces Tony de la Pena, who retired at the end of the 2005 fall semester, as UTPA's Faculty Athletic Representative. UTPA Sports Information
