May 5, 2006 Capital One formally announced its support of The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics during an unveiling ceremony on Friday (May 5) inside the International Trade and Technology Building on the campus of UTPA. Catherine Pena represented Capital One, formerly Hibernia Bank, and presented UTPA Director of Athletics Scott Street with a check for $19,000 at the unveiling ceremony. "We are very excited to announce that Capital One will be a member of our Bronc and Lady Bronc family," said Street. "The investment that Capital One is making in our student-athletes will continue to assist our efforts in developing an NCAA Division I athletic program that succeeds in competition, in the classroom and as part of our community." "Education is very important to Capital One, and we are proud of our involvement with UTPA Athletics. We look forward to being part of the UTPA family and supporting its student-athletes," said Herb Boydstun, President of Capital One's banking segment in Texas and Louisiana. Capital One is accelerating the bank's new branch building program, and the State of Texas will be receiving 40 new operations during the 2006 calendar year. Today, Capital One has 18 locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, 31 branches located in the Houston Area and 73 other branches around the State of Texas. Boydstun added that Capital One is committed to preserving Hibernia Bank's tradition of community support and will look forward to building upon that reputation in the Rio Grande Valley. "While the name on the branches is now Capital One, everything customers like about Hibernia remains unchanged," said Boydstun. Capital One's contribution will provide support to the UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, including scholarships, books, academic assistance and financial aid to more than 200 Bronc and Lady Bronc student-athletes.
