The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday (May 24) that it will participate in a pair of fundraising efforts in the Birdies for Charity as well as Chip-In for Schools Program for the second consecutive year.

Birdies for Charity
In the Birdies for Charity Program, potential donors agree to pledge one (1¢) cent or more per birdie made during the 2006 Valero Texas Open at La Cantera in San Antonio, TX, or they can make a straight donation of $20 or more. During the 2005 tournament, over 2,531 birdies were made by PGA professional golfers, which calculated to $25.31 per a penny pledge.

The Birdies for Charity Program is a non-profit organization and all proceeds go directly to the organization in which you want to donate your money. To donate money to the UTPA Department of Athletics, potential donors are asked to supply UTPA as "Charity Inviting Your Pledge" with the Charity Bird # of 245.

If a donor correctly guesses the number of birdies made during the tournament then the donor would eligible to win a 2006 Buick vehicle courtesy of General Motors/Buick Motor Division. There will also be 100 additional prizes, including a pair of American Airlines tickets anywhere in the contiguous U.S.

All pledges are tax deductible and 100 percent of all proceeds will go directly to the organization. Cash donations paid in advance must be turned in with the pledge form so the individual is not billed, and checks are to be made out to: The San Antonio Children's Foundation.

With every donation, he/she will receive a token of appreciation, and all donations can be made online at www.golfsanantonio.org. The deadline for the "Guess the Birdies" contest will be September 19, 2006.

Chip-In for Schools Program
In the Chip-In for Schools Program, tickets for the 2006 Valero Texas Open at La Cantera will be sold for $10 a piece through The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Otherwise, tickets are sold for $15 at participating Valero Cornerstones and $20 at the gate.

Similar to the Birdies for Charity Program, 100 percent of all proceeds will go directly to the organization, and all donors will have an opportunity to get additional money from the Bonus Bucks Program. The more tickets that are sold, the better chance the donor has at receiving additions funds. Checks for the Chip in for Schools Program are to be made out to: Golf San Antonio.

For further information concerning the Birdies for Charity and Chip-In for Schools Program, please contact The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at (956) 381-2221.
