Twenty-Six Broncs and Lady Broncs Earn Great West All-Academic Honors

The Great West Conference announced the recipients of the 2009 Spring All-Academic list with several individuals from the various programs representing The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

"I would like to recognize the following student-athletes for their commitment to their academics. These students are creating opportunities for themselves and with their commitment towards academics, they are creating a complete package of a Division I athlete," said Academic Counselor Andres Cantu. "The student-athlete's magnificent work has made our department and UTPA extremely proud."

The Great West compiled a list of 231 student-athletes from the seven member institutions in the conference with 26 of those coming from UTPA.

The men and women's track and field program had nine Bronc and Lady Broncs make the list. Those representing the program were Luis Nava, Omar Doria, Michelle Elizondo, Amanda Ferris, Sara Hernandez, Carolina Izaguirre, Stephanie Perez, Melinda Sarmiento and Kate Shannon. Elizondo concluded the spring semester with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in mathematics.

Representing men and women's basketball were Nathan Hawkins, Maria Ben Erlingsdottir and Janita Session.

In men and women's golf, Armen Kirakossian, Shane Pearce, High Wongchindawest, Mariale Camey, Rebecca De Leon, Haley Hocott and Bronwyn Sandberg represented the golf program.

For women's tennis, the Lady Broncs had four members make the list in Megan Bedeau, Sarah Burton, Luisa Cantu and Stephanie Willerding.

Representing the baseball program was Abraham Garcia, Tim Tefft and Bonham Hough.

Selection to the team requires that the student-athlete achieve a minimum cumulative 3.2 GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests. Student-athletes were selected based on their most recent GPA.
