Oct. 4, 2006 The University of Texas-Pan American Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will present "An Insider's Look: The Road to Glory" with keynote speaker Nevil Shed, who was portrayed and featured in the movie Glory Road. The luncheon will be held on Nov. 2nd at the Embassy Suites beginning at 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and will feature Shed speaking about his experiences as one of the five members of the Texas Western College basketball team that captured the NCAA Division I National Championship in 1966 after defeating the University of Kentucky. The luncheon will also feature the kick-off to the 2006-07 UTPA men's and women's basketball seasons with head coaches Tom Schuberth and DeAnn Craft. KGBT-Channel 4 Sports Director Clay Williams will be the emcee for the luncheon held at the Embassy Suites. In the evening, the Rio Grande Valley is invited to come to the Student Union Theater for the showing of the movie "Glory Road" at 7:00 p.m. followed by a panel discussion where Shed will be joined by former Pan American basketball player Tony de la Pena, who was a member of the Broncs from 1962-66, as well as Tony Forina of ESPN Radio 1240AM who will serve as the emcee and moderator for the evening. Shed was a key component for Texas Western College that season as the Miners became the first team in NCAA history to claim a national championship with five African-American starters in the lineup, and the feat was recognized as one of the NCAA's "25 Defining Moments" in the history of collegiate basketball. The story of the Texas Western College Miners was recently portrayed in Disney's movie "Glory Road" telling the story of Don Haskins and his Miners as they found victory while overcoming the racial obstacles of the 1960s. For his career with the Miners, Shed - nicknamed `Shadow' - was one of the team's most ferocious defenders and averaged 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Following his playing career at Texas Western College, Shed became a motivational speaker and consultant where he travels around the country sharing the story of the Texas Western College to colleges and universities, corporations, community centers and churches. Tickets for the luncheon will be $20, but admission to the evening movie showing and panel discussion will be open to the public. For more information on the luncheon and movie showing, please contact the UTPA Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at (956) 381-2221. UTPA Sports Information
