The University of Texas - Pan American baseball team picked up its first win of the season on second day action at the UTPA Classic played at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium Saturday (Feb. 5). The Broncs picked up the 5-4 victory to take their record to 1-1 on the season.
The Broncs started off strong getting two quick runs in the bottom of the first after senior Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) hit a triple followed by a Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.) RBI single to right field. After Eichel stole second, Zach Gordon (Corpus Christi, TX/Midland College) would hit an RBI double and the Broncs would lead 2-0 early in the contest.
To match Gordon's effort, Aaron Flowers (Rowlett, TX/ North Texas C.C.) and Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) would both record doubles of their own in the contest while the Broncs' squad would finish with a total of 13 hits on the night.
The Broncs would then score another run in the bottom of the second inning to take the score to 3-0. However, UTA would respond with a three run inning in the top of the third to tie the game 3-3. In the top of the fifth, the Mavericks would take the lead after a throwing error by the Broncs. Headed back to bat, the Broncs would score the tying run after Gordon hit a RBI single to right field.
UTPA would then seal the victory in the seventh scoring one run off of two hits and one UTA error in the inning. With the 5-4 lead the Broncs then battled it out defensively not giving the Mavericks another hit in the contest.
UTPA had three players finish with multiple hits on the night including freshman, Zach Smith (Sanger, TX/Sanger H.S.) who would record three in the contest. The Broncs finished with 13 hits to UTA's six, and each team posted one error on the night.
Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) would record the win in three innings pitched to take his record to 1-0 on the mound for the Broncs this season. He finished the night with giving up only one hit while facing nine batters. Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College) would record the save.
UTPA will return to action Sunday (Feb. 6) for day three of the Classic where they will face off against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Game time is slatted for 4:00 p.m.
