In game two of the triple header at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium, the University of Texas - Pan American downed the University of Illinois - Chicago by a score of 2-1 thanks to a ninth inning game-winning RBI from senior Leighton Autrey (Stephenville, TX/Navarro J.C.).
The game remained scoreless until the Broncs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth frame when Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) drove in Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) from third base to make the score 1-0 going into the seventh inning.
The Flames made a late comeback in the ninth inning when Larry Gempp Jr. singled to left field, bringing Chad Schroeder in from third base to tie the game at one run apiece.
With Stephen Davila (Weslaco, TX/Weslaco H.S.) in for closing duties, the Broncs were able to enter the ninth inning with a chance to win the game in the final at-bat, and that's exactly what they did.
Autry's last inning heroics came when he dropped a fly-ball into familiar territory in centerfield to send freshman Dominic Tognietti (Katy, TX/James E. Taylor H.S.) home for the game-winning score.
For the Broncs, newcomer Josh Wymer (Fort Worth, TX/Foster Ridge H.S.) earned the win for his efforts in eight innings on the mound in which he allowed just four hits and no runs in his second win of the season. Davila picked up the save while the Broncs improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Broncs take the field again on Saturday (Feb. 10) when the face Cal State - Northridge at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
Oklahoma State vs. Lamar
In game one of the Citrus Tournament, Oklahoma State University defeated Lamar University by a score of 5-2 in a game that featured two solo homeruns by the Cowboys.
The first solo shot came in the first inning when lead-off hitter Ty Wright blasted the third pitch of the game over the centerfield wall to put the Cowboys up by one early.
OSU finished the contest just as it started, with a solo homerun. The second solo home run came in the ninth inning courtesy of second baseman Tyler Mach.
Despite pitching a solid six innings, Allen Harrington (0-1) collected 10 strikeouts while only walking one batter in the losing effort.
OSU's Matt Gardner (1-0) earned the win by pitching five innings, featuring four strikeouts while only walking one batter and one allowing just one run. Jeff Breedlove was awarded the save for the Cowboys after pitching the final inning to close out the contest.
The Cowboys return to action on Saturday (Feb. 10) when the square-off against McNeese State at 3:00 p.m.
Cal State - Northridge vs. McNeese State
It took 11 innings for the final game of day one at the Citrus Tournament to be decided, and with a full count Cal State - Northridge catcher John Parham drove in the winning run with the bases loaded against the reigning Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year Danny Davis to earn the 4-3 victory over McNeese State.
The Matadors came back from a being down 3-2 in the seventh inning to tie the game at three apiece when Todd Shelton crossed the plate.
In extra innings the Matadors completed the comeback victory when Parham's single up the middle against Davis clinched the victory in a game that lasted more than four hours.
Earning the win for the Matadors was Joe Rocchio (1-0) who was the fifth pitcher of the night for CSUN. Rocchio allowed just one hit in nine at-bats while Sam English gets tagged with the loss as the winning run was put on base by the Cowboy pitcher.
CSUN face the Broncs on Saturday (Feb. 10) in another night game beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
