The University of Arizona (9-0), who entered the contest ranked 10th in the nation, handed UT - Pan American (2-9) its eighth straight loss with an 8-2 victory over the Broncs at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Saturday (Feb. 19).
The Broncs were able to jump out to a 2-0 lead on the Wildcats after Jacob Jones (Kress, TX/Texas Tech University) and Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) each scored on unearned runs to give UTPA the advantage. Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) added a hit to drive in Rodriguez for the Broncs' lone RBI of the game.
Arizona quickly responded in the top half of the fifth inning when Jeff Van Houten connected on a three-run home run over the left center fence to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Wildcats.
With the lead in place, Arizona starter Kevin Guyette went to work as he tossed a season-high seven innings and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts. He allowed a pair of unearned runs on three hits en route to upping his record to 2-0.
Broncs' starter Chad Linder (Reklaw, TX/Rush H.S.) suffered his second loss of the season as he pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out one. Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.) came in relief of Linder in the fifth inning and hurled the remainder of the game, allowing four runs on six hits.
Bryan Kervin collected three hits in the game for the Wildcats, and has racked up six hits in eight plate appearances in two games against the Broncs. Chris Frey contributed with two hits, two runs scored and a single RBI.
UTPA was only able to collect three hits in the game with J.P. Mackie (McAllen, TX/Sharyland H.S.) connecting on a two-bagger for the Broncs only extra-base hit in the game.
The Broncs and Wildcats will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at Edinburg Baseball Stadium with first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
