Bronc Bats Quiet in 5-3 Loss to DBU

March 9, 2006

Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American baseball team lost its third straight game on Thursday (Mar. 9) to the Dallas Baptist Patriots by a final of 5-3 in Dallas, TX.

Despite a solid effort from starter Ricky Ibarz (Caracas, Venezuela/New Mexico J.C.), the Broncs could not get a run across the plate until the top of the ninth inning while out-hitting the Patriots six to five.

Ibarz did not allow a hit until the sixth inning but gave up a run in the fifth inning. The first two batters of the inning walked and then advanced one base each on a sacrifice bunt by Evan Bigley. Matt Tucker then grounded out to third base to drive in DBU's first run of the game. The Patriots scored two more runs in the sixth when Cody Montgomery tripled, driving in Austin Krum. The next batter, Jeremy Goldschmeding, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give the Patriots the 3-0 lead.

DBU built up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth when they added two runs off reliever Ray Silva (Clearlake, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.). The Broncs were unable to solve Patriot starter Rodney Brantley for the first eight innings but finally got on the board when Osiel Flores (Mission, TX/UT-Brownsville) led the inning off with a double and was driven in two batters later when Patrick Brooks (Vallejo, CA/Santa Rosa J.C.) doubled. Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.) drove in Brooks a few batters later with a ground out to third base. Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) scored UTPA's third run on a wild pitch before T.J. Gilmer (Forney, TX/Forney H.S.) struck out to end the Bronc rally.

Ibarz pitched six and 1/3 innings, suffering the loss while allowing three earned runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking four. The loss moves his record to 1-3 on the season. Silva pitched one and 1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs on three hits, striking out two.

At the plate, Brooks was 2-for-4 with one run scored and one run batted in. Flores was the only other Bronc hitter to record an extra-base hit with his double. He was 1-for-3 at the plate with one run scored. Bartosh collected the only other Bronc RBI with his ground-out in the ninth.

Brantley earned the win for DBU, throwing eight and 1/3 innings while allowing three runs, just one of them earned, on six hits.

The Broncs' record falls to 8-11 with the loss while the Patriots improved their season record to 11-7.

The two teams meet again on Friday (Mar. 10) at 7:00 p.m. at Patriot Field in Dallas, TX.
