Early Miscues Doom Broncs against UTSA, 9-4

April 19, 2005

Box Score

Powered by a five-run fifth inning, five miscues and a strong pitching performance by Steven Vasquez, The University of Texas at San Antonio handed the UT - Pan American baseball program a 9-4 setback at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Tuesday (Apr. 19).

After allowing a single-run in the first inning, Vasquez proceeded to sit down 14 of the next 15 Bronc hitters over the course of the next five innings. The UTSA sophomore allowed only two runs on four hits in seven innings of action. With the victory, Vasquez evened out his record to 1-1 on the season.

The Broncs jumped out on the scoreboard early when Louie Alamia (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) opened up the first frame with a single to centerfield. It was Alamia's sixth consecutive hit after finishing 5-5 against Dallas Baptist on Saturday (Apr. 16). He would score one hitter later when J.P. Mackie (Mission, TX/Sharyland H.S.) ripped a double down the leftfield line.

The Roadrunners would tack on a run in the third inning, but exploded for eight runs over the course of the next three innings to take the game to 9-1. The Broncs would add a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning when Phillip Rodriguez (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg North H.S.) would score on a sacrifice fly by senior Matt Eichel (Grapevine, TX/Grapevine H.S.). It was Eichel's team-high 27 RBI of the season.

The Broncs would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 9-4. In that frame, Alamia would score his second run of the game on a groundout by Rodriguez. Two batters later, Mark Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX/Howard J.C.) would collect his team-high second hit of the game as he drove a double to left-center to score Raul Rodriguez (Pharr, TX/UT - Brownsville) from second base.

UTSA had five hitters collected two or more hits in the game with junior Ryan Crew leading the way with a trio of base knocks. He scored a pair of runs for the Roadrunners. Sean Danielson, J.R. Voyles, Michael McKennon and Tyler Johnson all notched a pair of hits apiece. Johnson drove in three runs while Stephen Holdren scored two runs.

Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) suffered the loss for UTPA and dropped his record to 5-3 on the season as he tossed 4.1 innings, allowing six runs - two earned - on 11 hits. He struck out three while surrendering one walk.

The Broncs and Roadrunners will continue their two-game series tomorrow at the Edinburg Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
