Powers Selected to Academic All-Independent Squad

Senior Otis Powers (Brownsville, TX/Simon Rivera H.S.) represented the Bronc baseball program on the 2006 NCAA Division I Academic All-Independent squad that was released on Friday (May 5).

Powers recorded a 3.409 grade point average in kinesiology and was a recipient of the Lou Hassel Award for the UTPA male student-athlete who has achieved the highest grade point average.

In his final season with the Broncs, Powers has posted a .205 batting average with nine hits, seven runs scored and a double in 28 games.

There were 39 student-athletes selected to the 2006 Academic All-Independent squad, and nominations were accepted from 13 NCAA Division I Independent programs - Dallas Baptist, IPFW, UC-Davis, Hawaii-Hilo, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Longwood, New York Tech, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Savannah State, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and UTPA.

Student-athletes for the NCAA Division I Academic All-Independent squad must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average, reached sophomore academic status and be a starter or key reserve for their respective squad.
