Lyndon Bartosh (Bay City, TX/Navarro J.C.), Cody Cisper (Peggs, OK/Northeastern State Univ.), Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.) and Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) represented the University of Texas-Pan American baseball team on the 2007 Academic All-Independent Team that was announced Wednesday (May 9).
Bartosh is a first-time Academic All-Independent award recipient as the Bronc utility player recorded a 3.26 grade point average in business management. The UTPA senior has appeared in 65 games during his two-year career with the Broncs, making the start in 28.
Cisper is also a first-time Academic All-Independent award recipient as the Bronc pitcher posted a 3.35 grade point average in general studies. The UTPA newcomer started 10 games as the Bronc's hurler, including a complete game against Northern Colorado on March 18th.
Garcia made the Academic All-Independent Team for the first time in his career as the local product recorded a 3.53 grade point average which was the best on the team in Kinesiology. The UTPA second baseman leads the team in triples with two, and started 44 games as a Broncs, making most of his starts as a designated hitter.
Guajardo is a first-time Academic All-Independent Team for the first time in his career as the UTPA pitcher posted a 3.33 grade point average in graduate school. Guajardo had his best season in 2007, appearing in 17 games and making the start in eight while posting a career-high 31 strikeouts in 68.2 innings pitched.
The NCAA Division I Academic All-Independent Team was selected by Sports Information Directors at member institutions. Nominations from each school were accepted for student-athletes who had at least 3.25 cumulative grade point average, had reached at least a sophomore academic standing and were a starter or key reserve for their respective program.
