Roly Gonzalez (Miami, FL/UNC-Greensboro) and Jordan Rutenbar (Waxahachie, TX/ Tyler Junior College) represented The University of Texas-Pan American baseball program on the 2008 NCAA Division I All-Independent Baseball Teams, which were released on Monday (June 1).
Gonzalez earned first team honors and is joined on the All-Independent squad by second team selection Rutenbar.
Gonzalez concluded his senior season with a .336 batting average while leading the team in hits with 76. Gonzalez finished his career ranked number-one in the nation with 46 stolen bases in 55 attempts. The senior outfielder led the nation in stolen bases per game and overall with .82 per game. Gonzalez inked his name as eighth all-time in UTPA baseball history with 46 stolen bases, the most since 1985 and is seventh all-time for his career in stolen bases with 66.
Gonzalez led the team in six offensive categories, including hits, triples, walks, at-bats, runs scored and stolen bases. He recorded three games with four hits, 23 games with multi-hit performances and 41 games with at least one hit of 56 games. Gonzalez finished tied for sixth in a single-season with 76 hits in UTPA baseball history. He was selected to the Hillcrest Ford Classic All-Tournament Team and was named to the National Independent All-Tournament Team during the 2008 season.
Rutenbar collected 19 multi-hit performances, recording a .335 batting average while collecting one hit in at least 40 of 55 games. The newcomer finished first in four categories including doubles, total bases, slugging percentage, and fielding percentage. Rutenbar earned All-Tournament Team honors at the HillCrest Ford Classic Tournament and was selected to the National Independent All-Tournament Team.
The 2008 NCAA Division I Independent Baseball Teams were selected by Sports Information Directors and Head Baseball Coaches at member institutions.
