Abraham Garcia (McAllen, TX/McAllen Memorial H.S.), Bonham Hough (Waxahachie, TX/Weatherford Junior College) and Tim Tefft (Bellevue, NE/Southwestern Community College) represented the University of Texas-Pan American baseball team on the 2008 Academic All-Independent Team that was announced Monday (June 2).
Garcia is a two-time recipient and first earned the distinction during the 2006-07 campaign. The local product recorded a 3.42 cumulative grade point average in kinesiology. Garcia appeared in 14 games before red-shirting his junior season due to an injury.
Hough - a Weatherford Junior College transfer - made the Academic All-Independent Team for the first-time in his career as the first basemen posted a 3.54 cumulative grade point average in communication studies. In his first season in a Broncs uniform, Hough appeared in 56 games where he recorded a .274 batting average to go with 57 hits, 45 runs-scored and 42 RBI.
Tefft is a first-time Academic All-Independent Team for the first time in his career as the UTPA utility player posted a 3.78 cumulative grade point average in psychology. Tefft appeared in 22 games and made two appearances on the mound for the Broncs.
The NCAA Division I Academic All-Independent Team was selected by Sports Information Directors at member institutions. Nominations from each school were accepted for student-athletes who had at least 3.25 cumulative grade point average, had reached at least a sophomore academic standing and were a starter or key reserve for their respective program.
