Aaron Guerra (Edinburg, TX/Edinburg H.S.) and Alex Guajardo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) became the fifth and sixth hurlers from The University of Texas-Pan American baseball squad to be drafted or sign professional contracts this summer.
Guerra was the second Bronc to sign a professional contract with the Edinburg Coyotes - a member of the United League Baseball - as he joined Kelly Casares (Missouri City, TX/McLennan J.C.)) as part of Vince Moore's pitching staff. The UTPA senior finished the 2006 season with a 3-5 record, including a 6.72 earned run average in 25 appearances, which was second most among the Bronc hurlers.
A product of Edinburg High School, Guerra led the Broncs with five victories during the 2005 season while throwing 89 innings, which were the most among UTPA pitchers. He also led the Broncs with 69 strikeouts while surrendering only 18 walks. In his career with UTPA, Guerra has produced victories over Dallas Baptist and Sam Houston State while tossing a one-hitter during his freshman season against Incarnate Word.
Guajardo signed a professional contract with Saraperos de Saltillo in the North Zone of the Mexican Baseball League, which is a Triple-A minor league baseball organization in Mexico. The UTPA junior appeared in only eight contests for the Broncs, posting a 0-0 record with a 9.53 earned run average.
Guerra and Guajardo join Bobby Gomez (Falfurrias, TX/Falfurrias H.S.), Tim Haines (Mission, TX/Blinn College), Dane Mason (Marlton, NJ/Oklahoma State University) and Casares as the Bronc hurlers to be drafted or sign professional deals this summer.
