Baseball head coach Manny Mantrana announced the addition of Mike McCarthy for the 2009-10 academic campaign.
"Our coaching staff is very happy to have Mike as part of our first recruiting class at UTPA," said second-year head coach Manny Mantrana. "He is a strong athlete who we feel has the ability to become an excellent player in our system and really solidifies our first recruiting class."
McCarthy joins the Broncs from the University of Vermont where he was named to the America East All-Rookie team during his freshman season. He concluded his first season with a .313 batting average along with 24 runs, 41 hits, 6 doubles, 8 homeruns and 30 RBIs.
The newly-named Bronc earned multiple letters and honors during his high school career and played with the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod League.
"I am very happy and confident with the decision I made to become a member of the UTPA baseball program; this is a win-win situation," said Mike McCarthy. "Not only will the coaching staff give each player the opportunity and tools to succeed on and off the field, but they also have such a competitive nature that UTPA has no choice but to be a nationally competitive program from here on out."
McCarthy joins Angel Ibanez, Austin Casas, David Fasci, Josh Silva, Luis Flores, Eric Donnelly, Alex San Juan, Bryant Elliot, Guadalupe Barrera, John Coyne, Vincent Mejia, Adrian de la Rosa, Alex Carnell, Stuart McInnes, Leo Chang, Hayden Daugherty, Cody Plunk, Kyle Kotchie, Richard Bandrich and Troy Green for the 2009-10 academic campaign.
