Spencer Wright enters his seventh season as an assistant coach for the UTPA men's basketball program where he serves as the recruiting coordinator as well as coaches the Bronc point guards.
"Spencer has the best understanding of what needs to be done, and a lot of the time, he knows exactly what I am thinking. He has a great rapport with coaches around the state as well as with the players on the team. Having been a former point guard, he has been trying to get our guys to understand how to play that position," said Davenport.
When Wright first arrived at UTPA, he did not have any direct coaching experience, but in the eyes of Hoffman and Davenport has turned into a solid, well-rounded coach respected by his players and peers. He was first a "restricted" coach during his first two years as an assistant, but after the NCAA changed rules for assistant coaches, he began developing his recruiting contacts that extend from the Houston, TX, area back east to New York.
Wright spent four years in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY, prior to joining the UTPA coaching staff where he worked with a variety of youth basketball programs throughout the city. During the summers of 1996 and 1998, Wright worked with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association as a youth basketball coach. He was responsible for helping instruct young players in basketball fundamentals along with as serving as a counseling them about moral and social issues.
A former standout at point guard for Oklahoma Baptist University, Wright was an All-Sooner Athletic Conference performer under former UTPA head coach and current University of Oklahoma assistant coach Bob Hoffman from 1992-95. He helped guide the Bison to two National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Tournament appearances. Oklahoma Baptist concluded the 1993-94 season with a 34-4 record, including a second place finishing at the NAIA National Tournament.
Upon graduation from Oklahoma Baptist, Wright was one of 20 players invited to participate in the Indiana Pacers free agent camp in the summer of 1996 where he made it to the final cuts with the team.
In 1995, Wright graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education.
Wright and his wife, Amy, have one son, Bryce (2), and the family resides in McAllen.
