IPFW recorded an 82-64 victory over The University of Texas-Pan American in United Basketball League action at Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN, on Saturday evening (Feb. 24).
With the setback, the Broncs dropped to 13-14 on the season and 3-5 in UBL competition while the Mastodons improved their overall record to 11-16 and 4-4 in conference play.
The Mastodons jumped out to an early lead on the Broncs by taking a nine-point advantage at 13-4 with 13:21 remaining in the first half following a lay-in by IPFW guard Jaraun Burrows. After being down by double digits throughout the first half, the Broncs were finally able to cut into the lead and get back to within striking distance during the final minutes before intermission.
UTPA junior Zach Trader (LaPorte, TX/LaPorte H.S.) connected on a jumper as time expired to cut the Mastodons' lead to four points at 31-27 heading into the locker rooms.
In the second half of action, the Mastodons opened up the frame on a 13-3 run and took a 44-30 following a dunk by guard Quintin Carouthers with 15:56 remaining in the game. Similar to the first half, the Mastodons maintained a safe double-digit lead, but the Broncs were able to get within eight points at 66-58 with 3:56 remaining in the game following a tip-in by senior forward Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.).
However - the Mastodons were able to quickly rebuild their home lead to double digits and outscored the Broncs by a 16-6 advantage in the final four minutes of the game to secure the victory.
Chris Perkins finished with a game-high 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting to go along with three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 37 minutes of action. Carouthers added 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 6-of-6 from the charity stripe, for the victors.
Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) finished with a team-high 18 points in the game on 7-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and two blocked shots in 22 minutes of action.
Brian Burrell (Nacogdoches, TX/Paris J.C.) collected his first double-double (points-rebounds) of the season with a 13-point, 10-rebound performance in 36 minutes of court time while Edwards added 14 points, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line, and five rebounds coming off of the bench.
The Broncs will be back in action on Monday (Feb. 26) when they travel to Newark, NJ, for a United Basketball League contest against New Jersey Institute of Technology with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
