Broncs Continue Road Woes against IPFW

Feb. 27, 2005

Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program dropped its record to 12-15, including 1-12 on the road, as the Broncs suffered a 66-49 setback at IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, on Sunday (Feb. 27).

The Mastodons were led offensively by senior David Simon, who scored a game-high 19 points and added nine rebounds along with three steals and three assists in 29 minutes of action. Simon's heroics started in the first half when he grabbed a Byron Malone missed jumper and scored the tip-in to give the `Dons an 8-7 lead. For the remainder of the game, IPFW would never relinquish the lead.

UTPA broke a 10-point deficit late in the first half when senior Alvaidas Gedminas (Plunge, Lithuania/Kirtland C.C.) connected on a jumper and made the free throw following the foul at the 1:18 mark. Sergio Sanchez (San Antonio, TX/Temple College) would then drain a trey with 48 seconds remaining in the half to cut the lead down to 27-23 going into the intermission.

In the second half, IPFW held the Broncs' offense to 29 percent (7-24) shooting en route to out-scoring its opponents 39-26 in that frame to take the victory. The Mastodons' offense wasn't much hotter as IPFW only shot 41 percent (14-34) in the second set of 20 minutes, but still managed to capture the victory.

Peter Campbell and Beau Bauer each scored 11 points for the `Dons while Quintin Carouthers added eight points and four rebounds.

The Broncs failed to have a player reach double figures for the first time all season as Eric Montalvo (La Joya, TX/La Joya H.S.) and Sanchez each scored seven points a piece to lead the squad. Matt Berry (Tulsa, OK/Indiana State University), Chris Fagan (Bronx, NY/Trinidad State College) and Derrick East (Binger, OK/Lookeba-Sickles H.S.) each scored six points. Usually a strength for the UTPA offense, but the Broncs offense was only able to connect on two three-pointers in the game in 18 attempts.

The Broncs will wrap up their season on Tuesday (Mar. 1) at New Mexico State with game time slated for 7:00 p.m.
