COLUMBIA, MO--In the opening round of the multi-site South Padre Island Tournament, the University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball team suffered a 100-44 loss to Missouri, Sunday afternoon (Nov. 22) at the Mizzou Arena.
The Broncs jumped out to an early lead on a three-point shot by Nick Weiermiller with just 21 seconds in the game, and the Broncs held the lead until Missouri went up 9-8 and never looked back.
Ben Smith led the Broncs with 15 points, all from beyond the three-point arc (5-12), followed by Luis Valera, who added nine points and nine rebounds while ChaRunn Jones scored six points.
Kim English led all scorers with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Laurence Bowers scored 14 points; Zaire Taylor added 13 points with Marcus Denmon chipped in 10 points.
From the field, the Broncs hit on 28.8% of their shots while Missouri was 57.1% from the field. From beyond the arc, the Broncs shot 30.8% (8-36) and Missouri hit on 58.3%(7-12).
"Missouri has a terrific team and is a top-notch program. We needed a flawless effort from our guys and for Mizzou to have an off day just to stay close, obviously neither of those things occurred. We will keep working hard and undoubtedly will perform better on Tuesday at Mississippi State," said head coach Ryan Marks.
The Broncs continue their road trip as they head to Starkville, Mississippi for the second round of the multi-site South Padre Island Tournament, as the take on Mississippi State on Tuesday (Nov. 24) with tip-off slated for 7:00 p.m. CST.
