Oregon State University improved its record to 7-4 after handing the UTPA men's basketball team a 78-54 setback at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, OR, on Wednesday (Dec. 28).
The Beavers strolled into halftime with a 14-point lead at 40-26 following a 51.6 percent (16-31) shooting performance, including draining six three-pointers in the frame. The Broncs converted on 40 percent (10-25) of their first half shots, but came out in the second half and shot 37.0 percent (10-27) before falling to the Beavers.
Sasa Cuic finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-11 shooting, including 2-4 from behind the three-point arc and 4-4 at the charity stripe, in 20 minutes of action. Nick DeWitz finished with 13 points on 6-10 shooting and blocked six shots as Marcel Jones notched 11 points, three rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and one steal in 24 minutes of action.
Colin Lien (Waterloo, IA/Southeastern C.C.) was the lone Broncs to finish in double figures as he collected 18 points on 7-13 shooting to go along with four rebounds in 24 minutes of action. Derrick East (Binger, OK/Lookeba-Sickles H.S.) added nine points and six rebounds while Larry Sheppard (Baton Rouge, LA/Iowa Western C.C.) and Kano Edwards (Bridgeport, CT/Western Nebraska C.C.) each posted eight points a piece.
The Broncs held the advantage on the boards by a 38-31 margin, but committed twice as many turnovers as the Beavers, 16-8. Oregon State posted a season-high 10 blocked shots in the contest and finished with nine three-pointers compared to four for the Broncs.
UTPA will be back in action on Friday (Dec. 30) in Fayetteville, AR, against the University of Arkansas with game time set for 7:00 p.m.
