UTPA BroncBusters - Larry Sheppard

Jan. 21, 2006

1. Right now, the team is 5-13 on the season. What does the team need to do in order to finish strong during the final stretch of the season?
LS - "I think that we need to continue to have confidence in ourselves and one another."

2. In your own opinion, what do you think about this season's results so far?
LS - "We have six or seven junior college players on the squad so we are a young team. We really haven't put all of the pieces of the puzzle together yet, and I think that we're starting to get close to it though."

3. The team is 3-3 at home and 1-9 on the road - what's the biggest difference you've seen from playing at home compared to playing on the road?
LS - "At home, we are a lot more confident in our shots going in. We are playing every home game like it's a must-win situation, and we are really focused at home. On the road, it's just a different environment with all of their fans getting on you and knowing everything about you. It's tough to stay focus in that type of environment."

4. If you have to grade yourself on your performance during the season - how would you do it and why?
LS - "I would give myself a C-minus. Being the point guard, I'm supposed to be the leader, the captain and the quarterback of this team. A lot of games are dictated by what I do and how I perform, and I just think that I need to continue to get better."

5. In your eyes, what do you believe is your role on this year's team?
LS - "I need to be the leader and need to do whatever I have to in order for us to win. If I have to shoot and score more then I'll do it. No matter what Coach tells me he needs me to do then I'll do it - scoring, passing, rebounding, defense or being more vocal. It doesn't matter as long as we win."

6. If you had to describe yourself as a player - how would you do it and why?
LS - "I would compare myself to Ron Artest in the way that he competes and is really competitive. It shows in every game that he plays how much he wants to win, and I think that I have that same mindset."

7. In your opinion, what do you believe are the strengths and weaknesses of the team thus far?
LS - "I would say our biggest strength is our team chemistry, and the fact that every one on the team likes each other and has each other's back. I think that our biggest weakness is that we need to get stronger mentally and not let something bad that happens in the game affect us so much."

8. You signed with the Broncs during the spring - what made you decide to come to the Rio Grande Valley and play for UTPA?
LS - "I really wanted to come here, and I enjoyed talking with Coach Davenport and thought that I could really help the program."

9. What would you say would be something that the everyday student wouldn't understand about life as a collegiate basketball player?
LS - "I don't think that the students really understand what we go through everyday because they think that we have it easy, but we really don't. We are always at the gym or study hall and nothing is easy for us. Honestly, playing basketball is like taking an extra three classes because of the amount of time that we put in."

10. Who has had the greatest impact on your life and why?
LS - "My mother because she has always been there for me, and it's always been the two of us. She taught me everything I know about life as well as basketball. She always keeps me level-headed."

Coach Dolan would be played by Matt Damon because he has that cool and aggressive personality. Coach Greg Wright would be played by Tom Cruise because he's laid-back and just chills."
