Emmanuel Jones went up for a dunk late in the second half and was fouled so hard he hit the ground, but when he came up from the floor the smile on his face indicated one thing. The Broncs were going to win the last home game of the 2008-09 campaign.
"They're trying to give me a heart attack because we fall behind and what I'm proud of is that we find a way to come back and win," third-year head coach Tom Schuberth said. "Any win is a good win especially on our home court where we've got three in a row now."
The Broncs, who are now on a three game winning streak, shot 38 percent from the field in their 60-53 win over the Highlanders of NJIT.
For Jones and Julius Allgood it was their final game at the UTPA Fieldhouse and there's no better way to finish than with a win. Jones finished the match with a career high 31 points to go along with nine rebounds and one three pointer. Allgood scored four points and collected five rebounds.
"Emmanuel and Julius did a marvelous job," Schuberth said. "I knew they would play well with their families being here. We got off to a slow start but they stepped up in the end."
Schuberth also thought that Allgood brought some extra energy again for the second straight game.
"I'm very proud of him (Julius Allgood)," Schuberth said. "He's been through a lot adversity with his injuries. So it's good to see him leave on a winning note."
The Broncs, who are now 9-16, hit the road for the remainder of the season where they'll match up against two future Great West opponents, Chicago State on Saturday, Feb. 28 and NJIT one more time on Monday, March 1 in New Jersey.
"We got our last two on the road," Schuberth concluded. "(This win) is going to carry some momentum for us."
Go Broncs!
