The Lady Broncs extended their eight stroke lead from day one to an 18 stroke lead after two rounds of play at the 23rd Annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships at the PGA Golf Course in Port St. Lucie, FL.
The Lady Broncs held on tight to their lead as they shot another low round of 307 to put them at a two-round score of 614. Bethune-Cookman trails the Lady Broncs by 18 strokes with a score of 632, while Hampton is in third with a 681.
Freshman Maria Jose Camey fired a low-round of 74 to keep the Lady Broncs in the game for a 1-over-par 145. Great West Champion Haley Hocott trails Camey by five strokes to stand in second with a 6-over-par 150.
Mariale Camey stands in fourth for the Lady Broncs with a 13-over-par 157, while teammate Bronwyn Sandberg stands in ninth place with a score of 166 and Sarah Kothny one stroke behind with a score of 167.
"One of the things the girls needed to do was stay consistent and that is exactly what they did, so in return they played well and conquered the job ahead of them," said Director of Men and Women's Golf Ofelia Lopez. "We know that just because we have an 18 stroke lead, it doesn't mean we can think we can let up or that we have the win. We'll go out there tomorrow and leave everything out on the golf course."
On the men's side, the Broncs remain in third-place with a two-round score of 583. Bethune-Cookman remains in the lead with a 15 stroke lead over the Broncs as Tennessee State stands in second by a score of 578.
Junior Armen Kirakossian dropped one spot to represent the Broncs in second place with a two-round score of 133 (67-66), while senior Shane Pearce holds the third spot in the standings with a 7-under-par 137.
Teammates High Wongchindawest and Orlando Moreno stand in a three-way tie for 32nd with a 13-over-par 157, while A.J. Gonzalez stands in 38th with a score of 159.
"Armen and Shane played really well today - the best individual rounds out of both of them," said Head Men's Golf Coach Santiago De Larrea. "It might be a little difficult to take first but I think we can definitely jump into the second-place spot tomorrow."
The men and women wrap up the 23rd Annual Minority Collegiate Golf Championship tomorrow (May 10) morning with a 7:30 a.m. ET shotgun start at the PGA Golf Course.
