EDINBURG,TX--The University of Texas-Pan American men's golf program captured the UTPA Golf Classic title this afternoon, Tuesday (Nov. 3), at the Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg, Texas.
"We are very excited about winning our home tournament. Armen came through today shooting the team's best round of the tournament (71) helping our team make up the four strokes we needed to take first place," said head men's golf coach Santiago Larrea. "The guys are very excited about this win. I know we will build on this win to take us into the spring season where the schedule is a bit stronger."
After the first day, the Broncs were in second place behind Houston Baptist. The second and final day was another story, as the Broncs stormed back behind the solid play of the entire team. The Broncs made up the difference (four strokes) and took first place by six strokes.
The Broncs were led by Kevin Kirakossian (Tualatin, OR/Tualatin H.S.) who fired a three-round total of 223, finishing tied for third place. Armen Kirakossian (Portland, OR/Wilson H.S.), Brandon Reyna (Mission, TX/Sharyland H.S.) and Orlando Moreno (Donna, TX/UT-Brownsville) each shot a three-round total of 225, with all three ending tied for fifth place.
High Wongchindawest (Bangkok, Thailand/Heritage Academy) shot a three-round score of 238, placing him tied for 15th place, while teammate Adam Haley shot a 243 for the tournament, which put him tied for 20th place. A.J. Gonzalez (Edcouch,TX/Edcouch-Elsa H.S.) shot a 247 for the tournament landing him in 22nd place.
The UTPA Golf Classic concludes the fall season for the Broncs.
