DALLAS, TX--The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program lost to Southern Methodist University (SMU) by a score of 5-2 this afternoon (Jan. 25) at the Turpin Tennis Center in Dallas, Texas.
In doubles play, SMU was able to get by the Broncs but not with out going to tie breakers at number two and number three doubles. Brothers Brett and Beau Bernstein, playing number one doubles, defeated Bryan Griffin and Tobias Flood, 8-5. Darren Walsh and Adham El-Effendi defeated Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta at number two doubles, 9-8 (7). At number three doubles, Artem Baradach and Pablo Perez defeated Andrew Irving and Marcus Dornauf, 9-8 (6).
"We fought hard in doubles, and as the scores show, it could have gone either way. It goes to show the intensity and focus you need to maintain for every point," said head coach Chris Taylor.
In singles play, UTPA's Vijayaragavan came back after losing the first set and defeated Baradach at number one singles, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. The Broncs other point came at number three singles where Beau Bernstein defeated Griffin, 6-2, 6-2. At number two singles, SMU's David Costa defeated Brett Bernstein, 6-4, 6-0. Walsh defeated Mohinta at number four singles, 6-4, 6-1. El-Effendi defeated Dornauf, 6-4, 6-1 at number five singles. At the number six slot, Perez defeated Irving 6-2, 6-2. "I am very proud of how our guys competed today. We fought hard from start to finish. Coach Neufeld did a great job of having his guys prepared for us," added Taylor.
"Coming off two matches, I think everyone put up a good fight. Even though we didn't come away with win, I think we earned alot of respect, " said Beau Bernstein.
The Broncs return to action on February 3, when the take on Baylor, the number six team in the nation in Waco, TX. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
