On a chilly afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Center, the University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team recorded their first win of the 2008 season against College of the Southwest.
"The team did well and they took care of business today," said men's and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. " Fundamentally they did all the things right that we have been working on and its good to get a "W" under your belt to start the season."
The match began with doubles' action where the Broncs dominated all their opponents in grand fashion. Brett Bernstein (Sugar Land, TX/Austin H.S.) and newcomer Ashwin Vijayaragavan (Andhrapradesh, India/ Kenedy Vidya Bhavan H.S.) recorded an 8-1 victory over Adam Fawl and Pete Garcia in the number-one position.
Marcus Dornauf (East Launceston, Tasmania, Australia/Scotch Oakburn College Prep)and Andrew Irving (Hamilton, New Zeland/St. John's College) posted an 8-1 win over Josh Baker and Taylor Crossland in the number-two position while Ivan Avila (Mexico City, Mexico/Texas Southern Univ.) and Enrique Montemayor (Brownsville, TX/Hanna H.S.) claimed a 8-2 victory in the third flight against John Lira and Marcos Villalobos.
In singles' action, Avila posted a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Fawl in the top-flight while Vijayaragavan handed Garcia a 6-0, 6-0 setback in the number-two spot in the lineup.
Bernstein kept the Broncs on a roll as he collected a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Crossland int the number-four spot of the rotation while Dornauf captured a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Lira in the number-five spot of the line-up and Shashank Vij (Helsinki, Finland/University of New Orleans) defeated Villalobos by scores of 6-0, 6-1 in the number-six position.
The Lady Broncs were unable to compete in today's match, due to unexpected illnesses by the College of the Southwest women's tennis team.
"Unfortunately the other team had some injuries and some illnesses and they ended up having to default to us. The girls are in great shape, they did their homework over the winter break and their fit. They were anxious to go today but we'll see how next week goes," added Hubbard.
The Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 26) when they face Texas Tech followed by a meeting with Clemson on Sunday in Austin, TX.
The Lady Broncs will match-up against Texas Tech on Friday (Jan. 25) at 5 p.m. followed by a match-up against Air Force on Saturday.
