Broncs Post First Conference Win, Lady Broncs Drop Close 4-3 Decision

The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs picked up a 5-2 victory and their first conference win of the season while the Lady Broncs dropped a 4-3 decision against Nicholls State on Friday (Feb. 22).

The Broncs started the conference match with doubles' action with Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving dropping a 8-4 decision to Radu Ionescu and Vlad Popa in the top flight while Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan collected a 8-6 victory over Eric Fisher and Phenyo Matong in the number-two spot of the rotation.

In the third flight, Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf earned a 8-5 win against while Sami Mouline and Chris Hernandez to seal the doubles' point.

In singles' action, Avila dropped a 6-2, 2-6, and 6-3 decision to Ionescu in the top flight while Vijayaragavan collected a 7-5, 7-5 win over Popa in the number-two spot.

Mohinta fell 6-1, 6-1 to Fisher in the number-three spot of the rotation while Irving handed Matong a 7-6, 6-7, and 6-2 setback in the fourth flight.

Bernstein collected a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 victory over Gasca-Silav in the number-five lineup spot while Dornauf finished off the match with a easy 6-0, 6-2 in the sixth flight.

In women's tennis action, the Lady Broncs fell by a close 4-3 count against the Colonels in Thibodaux, LA. The Lady Broncs recorded the doubles' point but dropped four singles' matches.

In doubles' action, Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima suffered a 8-5 loss over Florina Nosca and Melissa Harrison in the top flight while tandem Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau recorded a dominating 8-3 win against Anne-Claire Murier and Natalia Zamora in the number-two spot.

In the deciding match point of doubles' action, Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu recorded a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Sanja Stanojcic and Sumana Kalyanasundram.

In singles' action, Oliveira dropped her match to Nosca by scores of 6-2, 6-0 in the top flight while Cirne-Lima handed Murier a 7-5, 6-4 setback in the number-two spot.

Bedeau suffered a 2-6, 6-1, and 6-4 setback over Zomora playing in the number-three spot while Willerding fell to Harrison by scores of 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth flight.

Buksik dropped a 7-6, 7-6 decision to Stanojcic while Cantu recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kalyanasundram in the number-six position.

The Broncs and Lady Broncs will be back in action against Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday (Feb. 23).
