The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs and Lady Broncs tennis program recorded two wins against Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA on Sunday (Feb. 24).
With the win the Broncs improved their overall record to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the Southland Conference.
The Broncs began the day collecting the doubles' point with duo Ivan Avila and Andrew Irving starting the day off with a 8-5 victory over Marlon Gichie and Tyler Chin in the top flight while Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijayaragavan collected a easy 8-1 win over Elvis Espinal and Lashwane Nelson in the number-two spot of the rotation.
Nirvick Mohinta and Marcus Dornauf handed Bino Rasedisa and Onx Matong a 8-3 loss in the number-three spot.
In singles' action, Avila dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Gichie in the number-one position while Vijayaragavan handed Rasedisa a 6-2, 6-0 setback in the number-two spot.
Mohinta recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Matong in the third flight while Irving collected a 6-0, 6-0 win over Espinal in the number-five position of the lineup.
Bernstein collected a win in the fifth flight by scores of 6-2, 6-2 against Nelson while Dornauf recorded a victory playing in the sixth flight against Chin by scores of 6-1, 6-4.
In women's action, the Lady Broncs recorded a 6-1 victory and improved their overall record 8-5. Already half way into the 2008 campaign, the Lady Broncs have surpassed their win total of a season ago.
Giana Oliveira and Julia Cirne-Lima led things off with a 8-2 victory over Bethlehem Workeneh and Janelle Mosley in the top flight in doubles' action while Silke Buksik and Megan Bedeau kept the momentum going with a 8-3 win against Megan Wiltz and Kathryn Curtis in the number-two spot and Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu recorded a 8-3 decision against Sydney Lartigue and Gabrielle Marshall to seal the doubles' point.
The Lady Broncs dominated singles' action, as Oliveira led things off with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Mosley in the number-one spot of the rotation while Cirne-Lima dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision against Wiltz.
Bedeau handed Curtis a 6-3, 6-2 setback in the third flight while Willerding added a win under her belt as she posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Workeneh in the number-four spot of the lineup.
Buksik handed Marshall a 6-0, 6-0 loss in the number-six spot while Cantu collected an easy 6-0, 6-0 win over Lartigue in the sixth flight.
The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Saturday (Mar. 8) when they match-up against Prairie View A&M while the Broncs will head to Dallas where they will face-off against Southern Methodist University on Sunday (Mar. 9).
