Broncs Post 4-3 Win Over Lamar

March 30, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis team collected a 4-3 victory over Southland Conference-foe Lamar University on Saturday at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

With the win, the Broncs improved to 6-8 on the season and 2-2 in conference action.

"That's called 4-3 the hard way," said head men`s and women`s tennis coach Rob Hubbard! "We let the doubles point slip away from us and had to come back to win 4 of the 6 singles matches. It was a great conference win for us."

The Broncs led things off with doubles' action and dropped the point to the Cardinals.

In the top flight, Brett Bernstein and Ashwin Vijaryaragavan suffered a 8-6 setback over 42nd ranked tandem Flip Kanczula and Maciel Bogusz while Ivan Avila and Nirvick Mohinta recorded a 8-1 victory over Allen Gomes and Diego Snyder, playing in the number-two spot.

"The doubles continues to give me gray hairs but the guys are really beginning to put it together singles wise. We are young but becoming more seasoned with every match," added Hubbard.

Marcus Dornauf and Andrew Irving lost the third flight by scores of 9-8 to David Wania and Mario Janjic in the third flight.

After dropping the doubles point, the Broncs fought hard and captured four of the six matches in singles play.

Playing in the number-one singles' spot, Avila dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Kanczula while Vijayaragavan recorded a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Bogusz playing in the number-two spot of the rotation.

Mohinta suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback over Janjic in the number-three lineup spot while Irving collected a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, and 6-4 win against Snyder in the number-four singles' position.

"Ashwin and Marcus continue to play well and took care of business while Brett and Andrew came up with the final points by grinding it out and never giving in. I am proud of the whole team," concluded Hubbard.

In the fifth flight, Bernstein recorded a 6-4, 7-6 (1) victory over Gomes while Dornauf handed Wanja a 6-1, 6-2 setback in the number-six spot of the rotation.

The Broncs will be back in action on Thursday (Apr. 3) when they take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
