The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis player Aswin Vijayaragavan was named to the 2009 Southland Conference Men's Tennis All-Academic Team as announced by the league office on Wednesday (May 27).
Vijayaragavan earned the honor after accumulating a 3.41 grade point average in finance. The sophomore also led his team to the best conference finish with a 4-2 SLC record. He finished 8-7 for the season and 5-1 in conference, all in the No. 1 position. Earlier in the season, the Andhrapradesh, India native was named the 2009 Southland Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year.
Vijayaragavan joins Andre Moreira (UTSA), Brieuc Hamon (UT-Arlington), Laurent Montoisy (TAMUCC), Daniel Moreiras (UTSA) and Julien Roussel (Southeastern Louisiana) on the All-Academic Team.
The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions to qualify for the all-academic squad. Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 and were also named first-team All-Southland Conference and/or the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VI At Large team.
