Junior Brett Bernstein collected the Blue Singles Consolation title this past weekend at the UTSA Invitational hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio.
Bernstein lost in the opening round to Roman Petrunin of Tyler Junior College 6-4, 6-3 but rebounded to defeat Luis Rovira of St. Edward's 6-1, 6-4. In the semifinals of the Blue Consolation, Bernstein defeated Jose Devose of T.J.C. 6-2, 7-5 and defeated Pier Pieraccini 6-2, 7-5 for the Consolation title.
The junior not only had success in singles but in doubles as well. Bernstein teamed up with little brother Beau for a second-place finish in the consolation bracket. The Bernstein's lost to Petrunin and Mwalimu Phini in the finals.
In doubles, Aswin Vijayaragavan and Nirvick Mohinta dropped an 9-7 decision to James Langford and David Pace of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the semi-finals and teammates Marcus Dornauf and Shashank Vij dropped an 8-5 decision to Langford/Pace in the quarterfinals o the orange singles.
In orange singles, Beau Bernstein fell 6-2 to Max Stratmann of UTSA in the consolation semi-finals. While sophomore Marcus Dornauf dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Jose Carlos Tolentino of Laredo Community College in the semi-finals.
Shashank Vij fell short to Laredo's Tolentino and had to withdraw from his second match due to injury, in the consolation bracket, to Pace from TAMUCC.
In blue singles, Mohinta was defeated by James Langford from TAMUCC and dropped his second match as well and was defeated by Pier Pieraccinani. Sophomore Vijayaragavan defeated Phini in the first round but dropped a 6-3,6-2 decision to Cledson Carvalho from Laredo Community College in the quarterfinals.
The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's tennis program will host an alumni match on Saturday (Oct. 18) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center followed by the UTPA Invitational the following weekend on Oct. 25.
