The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's tennis program will host the UTPA Invite against Monterrey Tech this Saturday (Oct. 25) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
"Monterrey Tech is coming in for two days of round robin play. We'll have two or three rounds of singles and doubles," said head men and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "We are going to have a good chance to get some good competition with people we haven't seen or practiced with."
The men and women's squad last competed last week when they hosted an alumni match. Previous to that, the men competed at the UTSA Invitational on Oct. 11 where Brett Bernstein won the blue singles consolation title. Bernstein defeated Pier Pieraccini 6-2, 7-5 in the final round of blue singles competition.
"The men are looking good. There are some things we are working on but training is going well," said Hubbard of his men's team.
Other than competing in the Alumni Match this weekend, the women last competed at the SFA Open on Sept. 19.
"We have a little bit of rebuilding to do this year. We lost three starters who had lots of wins, but we have two freshmen that are strong which will help us out."
The men and women's tennis program hosted an Alumni Match on Oct. 18 with the present Bronc and Lady Broncs defeating the alumni. Alumni that participated in the match was Ana Rocio Pena (2005), Elysia Sloan (2006), Silke Buksik (2008), Julia Cirne-Lima (2008), Giana Oliveira (2008), Shelia Mabulac (2008); Oliver Steil (2006), Tom Mangelschots (2004), Kareem Abdullah (2002), Juan Saiz (2001), Neil Barraclough (2003), Pedro Perata (former head coach), Ivan Avila (2008).
The UTPA Invite will be a two-day event beginning at 12 noon on Saturday (Oct. 25) at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
