Men's Tennis Takes Doubles After Day One

Oct. 25, 2008

The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program swept doubles' action at the UTPA Invite this Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

"We did really well. All the men and women's doubles were really close but the men won all three" said head tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "When we went to Monterrey last year we got beat really badly but we did really well today. I'm happy with the way they played."

Doubles' action started off the UTPA Invite with Aswin Vijayaragavan and teammate Nirvick Mohinta defeating Meza and De Mucha 9-7. Brett Bernstein and Marcus Dornauf followed with another win against Monterrey Tech's De la Pena and Fernandez 8-5. Beau Bernstein and Andrew Irving rounded out the doubles' win with a score of 9-8 against Villarreal and Campos.

The women followed after the men's doubles but dropped all three matches. Stephanie Willerding and Luisa Cantu dropped their match 9-8 against Trevino and De la Pena. Megan Bedeau and Malin Anderson were defeated by Madrazo and Canepa by a score of 8-6 and Reetta Raty and Sarah Burton lost to Montemayor and Bravo 8-6.

Singles' action was divided into two flights: orange and green.

In the men's orange flight, Beau Bernstein recorded the only win against Monterrey Tech with a victory against Villarreal by a score of 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. Mohinta was defeated by Campos 7-6, 6-4 and teammate Shashank Vij dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Fernandez.

In the second round for the men's orange flight, Beau Bernstein came up with his third win of the night against Fernandez with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Mohinta recorded his second win of the evening against Villarreal 7-6, 4-6, 10-5. Vij was the only Bronc to be defeated in the second round with a score of 6-1, def. against Campos.

On the women's side, Malin Anderson defeated Montemayor with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 recording the only win in the women's orange flight. Sarah Burton was defeated by Bravo 6-3, 6-3 and teammate Reetta Raty lost to Canepa 7-5, 2-6, 10-5.

In the men's green flight, UTPA dropped all three matches against Monterrey Tech with a loss from Vijayaragavan against Meza with a score of 4-6, 6-2; Brett Bernstein a loss to De Mucha by a score of 7-6 (6), 6-3; and Dornauf a loss to De la Pena with a score of 6-0, 6-3.

The women in the green flight played in two rounds with Stephanie Willerding coming from behind to win the first round 2-6, 6-2, 11-9 in a third set super tiebreak against Trevino in the No. 1 position but dropped the second round to De la Pena with a score of 6-0, 6-2.

Both Megan Bedeau and Luisa Cantu lost both rounds first with Bedeau losing to De la Pena 2-6, 6-2 and Madrazo 6-2, 7-6; and Cantu losing to Madrazo 2-6, 6-3, 14-12 and Trevino 6-2, 6-4.

"We started off really well and I hope the second day goes a little bit better because we lost a couple close ones in the super tiebreakers in the third especially with the women," added Hubbard.

The Bronc and Lady Broncs will wrap-up the two-day event tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. There will be one round of doubles and those who played one round of singles will compete in two rounds of singles and vice versa.
