The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program recorded a successful day two at the Texas Invitational as three Broncs earn tickets to semi-finals this Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
Sophomore Aswin Vijayaragavan earned his ticket to the semi-finals as he defeated Texas' Olivier Sajous, the No. 3 seed / No. 46 in the nation, 6-2, 6-2 followed by another win against Ayrton Wibowo (Oregon) on Saturday morning 6-2, 6-2. Vijayaragavan then handed Marcus Lunt (Texas A&M Univ.) a 6-3, 6-4 upset.
Vijayaragavan is to face the No. 7 nationally ranked Dmitry Kutrovsky (Texas) in the semi-finals on Sunday morning at 8:30. This marks the first time a UTPA player makes the semi-finals at the Texas Invitational.
"It's a great thing for Texas-Pan American and for Aswin. Of the four competing in the semi-finals, three are from Texas and one from UTPA. With big, strong performances this may help put Pan Am on the map," said head men and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard.
In singles A consolation, Brett Bernstein defeated Justin Raiti (St. Edward's) 6-3, 6-4 and continued his strong performance and went on to defeat James Langford (TAMUCC) 6-2, ret. Bernstein is to face R. Shellenberg (Texas) in the semi-finals.
Freshman Bea Bernstein found his way to the singles B consolation semi-finals as he defeated V. Gunaseelan (Denver) 6-3, 6-1. Bernstein is to face Jonathan Schwerin (Marquette) tomorrow morning in the B consolation semi-finals.
The men's tennis team will wrap-up the Texas Invitational on Sunday morning as all three matches are set for 8:30 a.m. at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
