The University of Texas-Pan American men's tennis program wrapped up the Texas Invitational with three Broncs in the finals this Sunday (Nov. 2) at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
"It was a big weekend for Aswin Vijayaragavan and UT-Pan American tennis. His semi final outcome with a win over one of the top players in the nation continues to serve notice that our program is one to be taken seriously," said head men and women's tennis coach Rob Hubbard. "The performances from Brett and Beau Bernstein also show how far we have come in the past two years as they beat players from major programs such as Texas, Marquette and Oregon along the way."
In the final round of the Singles A draw, Aswin Vijayaragavan was defeated by No. 7 nationally ranked Dmitry Kutrovsky (Texas) 6-4, 6-4.
For singles A consolation, Brett Bernstein handed R. Shellenberg a 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 upset in a third set super tiebreak. Bernstein then went on to face Jon Wiegand (Texas) in the singles A consolation finals but lost 6-3, 7-6.
For brother Beau Bernstein in singles B consolation, Bernstein defeated Jonathan Schwerin (Marquette) 7-6 (6), 6-1 to face Juan Martin Paredes in the finals but lost 6-3, 4-6 (11-9).
The UTPA men's tennis program will hit the court in two weeks on Nov. 15 for the Pro Am Fundraiser hosted by UTPA at the Cimarron Country Club in McAllen, Texas.
