Jennifer Leatherman begins her second season as an assistant coach with The University of Texas-Pan American men's and women's track and field program.
Leatherman comes to the Rio Grande Valley from the Nebraska Department of Corrections where she served as the Recreational Specialist. As a Recreational Specialist, Leatherman would supervise inmate employees while hiring and training workers to clean and maintain fields and recreational areas.
She would also organize and schedule recreational activities and athletic events for inmates, including leagues and tournaments. Leatherman also assisted with the inventory, inspections and helped maintain recreational equipment.
Before joining the Nebraska Department of Corrections, Leatherman was part of the USA Track and Field Development Program as a hammer thrower. During her time with the USA Track and Field Development Program, the Missouri native recorded a personal best in the hammer with a throw of 226 feet (68.93m).
In the fall of 2006, Leatherman was part of the Penn State Recreational Sports where she was an Intramural Sports Intern and Student Supervisor. As an intern and student supervisor, she would register teams for the fall events and also implemented the 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament and the Tennis Tournament.
Leatherman was no stranger to Penn State as she was a five-time NCAA All-American at Penn State University. She received Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolades during her junior and senior campaigns. The five-time All-American was also named Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 2006 for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
The newly-named assistant coach was also a U.S. Track and Field Championship finalist in the hammer in 2005 and 2006, while also named NCAA Big East Regional Champion in the hammer in 2005. Leatherman was named Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Week on nine occasions and was a Big Ten Conference Champion seven times.
She also holds the Penn State record in the 20lb. weight and hammer and the Big Ten Conference record in the 20lb. weight. At the end of her college career, Leatherman was a four-time All-Big Ten First Team for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. At the 2006 Penn Relays, Leatherman was a college champion in the hammer and was named an Academic All-American.
Leatherman currently resides in Edinburg.
