Field Events and Distance Shine at Rice Twilight

The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's track and field program returned home with outstanding performances from the distance and field events this Thursday, April 24 from the Rice Twilight hosted by Rice University.

Laredo native Michelle Elizondo placed second in the hammer throw with a toss of 148-07. Fellow thrower Brenda Gonzalez finished in the ninth place spot in the javelin with a throw of 103-09.

Newcomer Diana Galloso competed in the 1500M run crossing the finish line in 21st with at time of 5:18.89. In the 5000M run, Sara Rodriguez placed fifth with a time of 18:25.08.

In the sprints, Cecilia Lott finished 12th in the 100M dash and 17th in the 200M dash. In the 100M dash, Lott recorded a time of 12.58 and a 26.13 in the 200M dash.

Ashlon Martin may have had the best night placing third in the 400M dash and ninth in the 200M dash. Martin finished the 400M dash with a time of 56.92 and the 200M dash with a time of 25.43.

In the men's field events, Oscar Barrera placed seventh in the hammer throw with a throw of 145-02 and ninth in the discus with a toss of 141-00.

Edinburg native Wally Gonzalez took home a first-place finish in the 800M run with a time of 1:52.60. Gonzalez also competed in the 1500M run finishing 24th with a time of 4:22.45. Teammate Gilroy Martinez competed alongside Gonzalez in the 800M run finishing third with a time of 1:52.81.

In the 1500M run, Luis Nava took home a second-place finish with a time of 3:54.23, Rolando Vela placed ninth with a time of 3:59.39, and junior J.J. Hernandez finished in 11th with a time of 4:03.92.

Newcomer Angel Ramirez competed in the 5000M run crossing the finish line in eighth with a time of 15:22.02.

Jameson Strachan competed both in the 400M and 200M dash finishing eighth in the 400M and 12th in the 200M dash. Strachan recorded a time of 48.81 in the 400M and a 22.66 in the 200M dash.

The Broncs look to revisit Houston, Texas next week for the Houston Invitational hosted by The University of Houston. The meet will be held at the Carl Lewis/Tom Tellez International Track and Field Complex. The event will be a two-day meet with field events starting off on Friday afternoon. All running events will be held Saturday.
