With a qualifying time of 1:54.37, Wally Gonzalez captured the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.91 this Saturday (May 2) afternoon at the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Tom Samuels Stadium.
Gonzalez marked a career personal best at UTPA and broke his previous mark of 1:51.98.
Junior Omar Doria earned a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.32, while senior J.J. Hernandez placed 10th overall with a time of 4:10.04. Teammate Gilroy Martinez trailed Hernandez by 0.64 seconds to finish 11th with a time of 4:10.68.
Doria also recorded a personal best in the 1,500-meter run and broke his previous mark of 4:00.90.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the men placed fifth as they clocked a time of 3:27.60, while in the field events, Oscar Barrera placed seventh overall in the discus with a toss of 140-10 (42.94M).
Eastern Illinois took both the men and women's title as the men earned 227 points. Eastern Kentucky finished in second for the men followed by Southeastern Missouri in third, Tennessee State in fourth and the UTPA Broncs in fifth.
The men next prepare for the Great West Conference Championship on May 15 in Houston, Texas hosted by Houston Baptist.
