The University of Texas-Pan American men and women's track and field program recorded five top-five finishes on day one of the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Houston, Texas hosted by Houston Baptist at the Rice Track Stadium.
In the women's field events, the women's track and field program notched three top-five finishes as senior Amanda Ferris earned another Great West title as she took first place in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.26 meters.
Fellow seniors Michelle Elizondo and Stephanie Perez earned a second and fourth place finish respectively in the hammer throw as Elizondo threw a 48.87M and Perez a 45.28M.
In the men's hammer throw, Oscar Barrera placed third overall with a throw of 45.72M. South Dakota took the first and second place spots in the men's hammer as Ben Walters took title with a throw of 53.40M and Preston Scott took the runner up spot with a throw of 49.09.
Sophomore Angel M. Ramirez placed fourth overall in the men's 10,000-meter run as he clock in a time of 33:12.76.
The men and women's team will continue with the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships tomorrow as they will compete in the premlims with field events beginning at 4:00 p.m. and running events at 5:20 p.m.
