University of Texas - Pan American pole vaulter Jeff Martzall (Fort Wayne, IN/Northrop H.S.) was honored by the National Collegiate Division I Track Coaches Association as an Academic All-American on Tuesday (Aug. 3).
In order to be nominated, candidates must possess a grade point average of at least 3.25 and have qualified for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships. Martzall was the lone Broncs' representative on the list as he finished the spring semester with a 3.483 GPA in business marketing.
At the 2004 NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Championships in College Station, TX, Martzall broke his own school record by clearing 16-4.50 feet en route to placing 13th. He is the only UTPA pole vaulter to ever clear 16 feet in both indoor and outdoor meets.
"I'm extremely excited and proud of Jeff for receiving this honor. To me, this award is more prestigious than any on-field All-American award because it shows that Jeff has excelled both on the field and in the classroom. He is an example of the type of student-athlete that we try to recruit here," said head coach Ricky Vaughn.
