Lady Broncs Drop 56-41 Decision to Islanders

Jan. 21, 2006

Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team (4-15) suffered it's fifth straight loss on Saturday (Jan. 21) to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (10-7), 56-41.

The Lady Broncs kept the game close through the first 12 minutes of the game, trailing by one at the 8:01 mark. The Islanders then went on a 9-0 run, capped by a Jenesis Shaw lay-up, extending their lead to 21-12. TAMUCC would build it's lead to 15 at the end of the half, which was marred by 25 turnovers from the two teams combined.

In the second half, UTPA held strong, pulling as close as 10 on two occasions, but the Lady Broncs could not get any closer. The two teams both scored 23 points in the second half and the Islanders pulled out the 15 point victory.

Freshman Robin Garrett (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) had another solid game for the Lady Broncs, tying a career-high and leading the team with 13 points on 5-13 shooting. Garrett was also 3-4 from the charity stripe and also led the team in rebounding with nine.

"Robin was able to stay out of foul trouble tonight and was able to draw double-teams all game down low. She's developing well and she just needs to trust her instincts when she comes down with the ball," commented head coach DeAnn Craft.

Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.) had another solid game for UTPA, connecting on 4-8 shots from the field and 1-1 from the free throw line, good for nine points. MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) was a perfect 3-3 shooting the ball, scoring six points.

"Devin is having such a great season, but it's going unnoticed due to our record," added Craft.

The Lady Broncs were out-rebounded by the Islanders, 41-35, and turned the ball over 22 times in the loss. TAMUCC shot at a 38 percent clip while holding UTPA to just a 33 percent shooting percentage.

"We just had too many turnovers in the first half and then allowed too many offensive rebounds in the second half. They are a quality team with a top-100 RPI and we can't expect a positive outcome without controlling those aspects of the game."

The Lady Broncs will be back in action on Tuesday (Jan. 31) when they travel to Wichita, KS to take on the Wichita State Shockers at 7:00 p.m.
