Lady Broncs Wrap-up Road Season in Defeat

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team didn't have any second-half heroics when it faced North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, on Saturday (Feb. 17) as it dropped a 69-57 road decision at the Bison Sports Center.

The Lady Broncs jumped out to its biggest lead in the first half of four points with the score 18-14 in the first 20 minutes of play on a Tamara Vaughn (Houston, TX/Blinn College) jumper with 12:38 remaining in the opening stanza, but NDSU's Emily Moran didn't let the game get out of hand on the Bison home court, connecting on a trio of three-pointers on her first three shots of the contest.

Lead by Vaughn, UTPA headed to the locker room with a 31-29 lead on the road against NDSU while finishing the first half shooting 48.0 percent on 12-of-25 from the field compared the Bison with 43.5 percent on 10-of-23 shooting.

Vaughn accounted for 10 Lady Bronc points in the first 20 minutes of play. The UTPA newcomer finished the game with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc while collecting four rebounds.

Senior MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) was the only other Lady Bronc in double-digits with 13 points on 6-of-9 from the field, picking up a team-high six rebounds while blocking three shots in 37 minutes of action.

NDSU's Emily Moran led all scorers with 27 points, draining 8-of-19 from the field and 6-of-14 from three-point range while recording three steals in 36 minutes of play.

The Lady Broncs were outscored by 14 points in the second half, connecting on 35.7 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes. NDSU led by as many as 15 points in the contest with 2:38 remaining in the game.

UTPA finished with 41.5 percent field goal percentage compared to 42.6 percent from the Bison. NDSU won the rebound battle 35-32 while committing just 10 miscues to the Lady Bronc's 15. The difference in the contest came in free throw shooting as the Bison picked up 14 points to the Lady Bronc's seven. UTPA led in three statistical categories, including points in the paint (28-14), fast break points (8-2) and bench points (15-8). NDSU led by as many as 15 points in the contest with 2:38 remaining in the game.

This concluded the road trip portion of the 2006-07 campaign for the Lady Broncs as they finished with a 10-17 record in the loss. UTPA plays the final three games of the season at the UTPA Fieldhouse beginning with IPFW on Saturday (Feb. 24) with tip-time set for 2:00 p.m.
