Box Score

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team dropped its 13th road game of the season on Thursday (Feb. 23) in Corpus Christi, TX to the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a score of 61-49.

UTPA jumped out to a quick lead on a Robin Garrett (Nacogdoches, TX/Nacogdoches H.S.) lay-up on the first shot of the game and never held another lead. The Islanders went on a quick 10-1 run and led by seven with 14:24 left in the first half. The Lady Broncs then battled back and tied the game at 12-12 less than three minutes later thanks to a Dominique Montague (Gilbert, AZ/Central Arizona College) three-pointer.

TAMUCC would pull back ahead, again by seven points with just over seven minutes left on the clock. UTPA answered quickly with a three-pointer and a jumper from Devin Reed (Indianapolis, IN/Cowley County C.C.), pulling within two. The half came to a close with the Lady Broncs trailing by just one.

The Islanders kept trying to pull away, but were unable to lead by more than seven for most of the game. In the second half, TAMUCC built a seven-point lead with 15:04 left to play only to see the Lady Broncs close the gap to 47-46 at the 5:19 mark on a Tiona Wilson (Bradenton, FL/Southeast H.S.) jumper.

The Lady Broncs were unable to tie the game or take the lead in the second half. The Islanders pulled away in the final five minutes, outscoring UTPA by a margin of 14-3 with the Lady Broncs turning the ball over four times during that span.

Reed led the Lady Broncs in scoring with 10 points on 3-14 shooting from the field, including 2-7 from behind the three-point arc. The Lady Bronc senior also finished with two assists, two steals and two rebounds in 37 minutes on the floor.

Rachel Jones (Little Rock, AR/Little Rock Central H.S.) connected on 4-7 shooting and 1-4 from the charity stripe for nine points. Jones also dished out four assists and pulled down three rebounds. Wilson also had four assists on the night while adding two points and two steals.

MaHogany Daniel (Corpus Christi, TX/Mary Carroll H.S.) led the team in rebounds, grabbing eight boards while adding six points of 3-5 shooting. Montague finished with six points, hitting 2-3 from three-point range.

Monica Pena led all players in the scoring with 14 points and Elisa Beagle finished with a game high nine rebounds for the Islanders.

The loss drops the Lady Broncs' record to 6-20 on the season while the Islanders improved to 15-11.

UTPA next heads to Corvallis, OR to take on the Oregon State Beavers of the Pacific-10 Conference on Monday (Feb. 27) at 7:00 p.m.
