Lady Broncs Avenge Loss Defeating NJIT 68-56

The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball team was back on the court on Saturday where they faced off against New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Lady Broncs avenged their loss earlier in the season with a 68-56 win making them 10-3 at home, a new school record.

"It was an important win first and foremost because we wanted to send our seniors out with a victory," sixth-year head coach DeAnn Craft said. "We keep breaking our own (home) record and to say the least the field house has been very good to us."

The seniors on the squad played their last game at home and made it a memorable one for them, but Craft knows that there is still work to be done because they are still on pace to have the best record in program history.

Senior Robin Garret finished the match with 18 points, five rebounds and one steal and senior Teshay Winfrey scored 14 points, three assists and went two for three from the three-point line.

"I thought Robin Garret was outstanding tonight," Craft said. "It might have not been Teshay's best game but we're not in this position if Teshay Winfrey is not on this team."

Craft also said that she marveled at the maturity of Epiphany Smith, who finished the game with 14 points, five assists and two steals.

"In big games she always seems to respond," Craft said. "They (NJIT) couldn't trap her because she is so smart when she has the ball in her hand and she does a great job at recognizing defenses."

The Lady Broncs have a week off before they face Chicago State Saturday Feb. 28 in Chicago.

"We've got to learn from this game because we need to be able to be real sharp going into Chicago and see if we can attempt to get a sweep," Craft concluded. "I just want to continue to see great play."

Go Broncs!
