The University of Texas Pan American women's basketball team completed a feat for the second time in program history at the National Independent Showcase in Orem, Utah. The 14-14 Lady Broncs defeated Longwood University 65-60 tying the best single season record of all time.
"They (the seniors) are in a special category since they are have now tied the all-time win total for UTPA and have two more opportunities to establish a new record," sixth-year head coach DeAnn Craft said.
Senior Danielle Kostacky (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater HS) finished the game with 12 points, all from behind the three-point line. Teshay Winfrey (Houston,TX/Eisenhower HS) racked up 18 points, five boards and went 4-5 from the free throw line.
"Stacky was the difference in the game. She shot 4 for 5 from beyond the arc," Craft said.
The Lady Broncs who shot only 31 percent held the Lady Lancers to only 33 percent from the field.
"Our defense was tremendous," Craft said. "We got the key stops we needed and our seniors played with a great competitive desire."
Up next for the Lady Broncs is day two of the National Independent Showcase where they will square off against either Utah Valley or Chicago State tomorrow in the semi final of the tournament.
One more win for the Lady Broncs and they will set a new season record.
