Senior Teshay Winfrey and freshman Epiphany Smith represented The University of Texas-Pan American women's basketball program as they were selected to the 2008-09 All-Independent honorable mention team announced this Wednesday, March 18.

"We are very proud of our team's accomplishments this season. It's a great individual honor for Teshay and Epiphany to be recognized with this Independent award," said sixth-year head women's basketball coach DeAnn Craft. "We have a great deal of gratitude for the fine job that both Teshay and Epiphany did and it is very nice to see such team players receive individual honors."

Senior Teshay Winfrey returned as one of the Lady Broncs returning starters and found herself on the starting lineup in 24 of 30 contests. Winfrey averaged 11.5 points per game ranking her first amongst the squad. This also marks the second time Winfrey makes the All-Independent Team during her tenure at UTPA.

She connected on .419 percent (119-284) of her field-goals made, .343 percent (47-137) in three-point field-goals made and .811 percent (60-74) from the charity stripe. The 5-8 guard recorded 17 games of 10 points or more with a career-high 23 points against Tennessee-Martin (Nov. 17), which marked the best game of her collegiate career with nine rebounds, six steals, four assists and a perfect 6-of-6 trip to the foul line.

Winfrey also led the team in rebounds with 5.4 rebounds (162) per game and offensive rebounds with 3.6 (107). The Houston, Texas native also notched one double-double for the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds against Air Force (Nov. 26).

"It is a very deserving honor for Teshay, who led us in scoring this season and has been a significant contributor during her four seasons as a Lady Bronc," said Craft.

In just her first season as a Lady Bronc, Smith averaged 10.0 points per game in 30 starts for the Lady Broncs. The floor general ranked first amongst the squad in six statistical categories, including three-point field goal attempts, free throw attempts, free throws made, assists and minutes played.

Smith connected on .342 percent (88-257) in field-goals made, .315 percent (47-149) in three-point field-goals made and .778 percent (77-99) in free throws made. She also recorded 17 games of 10 points or more.

Smith concluded her freshman campaign with 10.0 points per game, 4.3 assists per game, 2.2 rebounds per game and 1.3 steals per game.

"In just her first season, Epiphany led us to a record tying season and helped establish a new home court record (10-3)," added Craft.

The 2008-09 Women's All-Independent Team was selected by sports information directors and head coaches at the Independent institutions.
