In two rounds of play, the University of Texas-Pan American women's golf program landed a runner-up spot with a total score of 648 at the Great West Golf Championships this Monday (April 20) afternoon at the Sienna Plantation Golf Course in Houston, Texas.
"We went out with the mentality of believing and trusting in ourselves to play well, however, when you want something so bad you have the opposite effect where you try to hard," said Director of Men and Women's Golf Ofelia Lopez.
Sisters Mariale and Maria Jose Camey lead the Lady Broncs as the two tied for fourth with a two-round score of 160.
Sophomore Haley Hocott trails the Camey sisters with a 162 for an eighth place finish. Senior Bronwyn Sandberg tallied a 166 for the Lady Broncs while Sarah Kothny finished in a two-way tie with a score of 171.
Houston Baptist's Paige Gibson leads the women with a two-round score of 154 as she fired a 77 in both rounds. HBU also leads the women in team scoring with a two-round score of 634; UTPA (648), Utah Valley (661), Chicago State (680) and North Dakota (682) round out the top-five.
"Tomorrow we are looking to go out and play our game and play against the girls we are playing. We need to put everything together and leave everything out on the golf coures, let the golf clubs do the talking," added Lopez.
The women wrap up the Great West Golf Championships tomorrow morning as they finish the remaining 18 holes at the Sienna Plantation Golf Course.
